The Rotary Club of Puerto Barrios, Izabal, Guatemala, cofounded by Steve Dudenhoefer in 1997, was the first Rotary club chartered on the country’s eastern coast. Dudenhoefer is both a past and incoming club president. The club has 26 members.

A new Ak'Tenamit campus will be on an archaeological digging site where Cancuén, an ancient Maya city, once stood. Vanderbilt University purchased the 556 acres of land and granted Ak'Tenamit a 25-year renewable, rent-free lease. Renowned archaeologist Arthur Demarest, director of the university's Institute of Mesoamerican Archaeology and Development, will head the excavation of a massive palace, workshops, ports, and other structures.

Forty-eight volunteers from 11 Rotary clubs in District 6440 (Illinois, USA) helped construct a new library last February that will serve more than 500 students. The group also built bunk beds that increased the existing dorm's capacity by 33 percent, and desks for 25 new computers.
