I'm an exchange student in Canada, from Austria. I came here about 2 months ago and I love it. When you want to go to a foreign country, you don't have to know the language, because Rotary has great hostfamilies who speak English (what can be really helpful at the beginning). And the costs are very different in every country, but in North America it's about 4500 Dollar for everything (flight, pocketmoney,..visa....)

I will be meeting with my local Rotary group this Tuesday for the first time. I hope to get lots of info. there. I am interested in fellowshiping withi Rotarians in Australia, as I would like to exchange there. Developing relationships withi others there would be a great way for me to get myself aclimated and overcome any fears and intrepidations. thanks. Best wishes to all.

Hi, I received a letter in the mail from my school saying that I am eligible to be a rotary foreign exchange student for the 2010-2011 school year. I am very much interested but would like to know the price ranges and where I would be going. Would I need to learn a new language? Thanks :)

Hi, I'm from the United States and I've recently found out about this program from my Japanese teacher. She was here to learn English so that she could teach it in Japan. Her parents are host parents from Sendai. I was wondering about two things, one: do I have to be a member to participate in the youth exchange program? and two: would I be able to go to Sendai, Japan to stay with a host family that I already know? Thank you, Katie

Hey Everyone, I shall give an introduction before I start answering some of the questions here. My name is Amanda Blanchard (spikes_411@hotmail.com) and I was a Rotary Exchange student from Canada to Switzerland in the 2005-2006 year. Hopefully I can answer all of your questions, and if I cant hopefully I will be able to direct you to someone that can. So here goes. Do you have to be a member of Rotary? Rotary is an organization of business and community leaders. Generally the age range is above 30. So no, you don’t have to be a Rotarian. If you are interested in joining a Rotary program and getting involved before an exchange there are a couple options available to you including RYLA, RYPEN, and INTERACT. (email me if you’d like more information on any of these programs) What is a Rotary Youth Exchange? A Rotary Youth Exchange is where you travel to another country for a school year to study. Youth exchange years are from August-July and January-December as most northern hemisphere school years run August-July and most southern hemisphere school years run January-December. The purpose of Rotary Youth exchanges is for you to travel to another country, learn a new language, culture, and way of life. It is an amazing opportunity that thousands of youth participate in every year. You may travel between the ages of 16-18 and you are gone for an entire year. How to apply: Rotary is split into many Districts around the world. Each District runs a Rotary Youth Exchange programs. Not every club participates in the programs but most do. Every district has a different application process which generally starts in September for the following year. The best thing to do is search for clubs in your communities or a large community near you, and get in contact with the club or district to let them know you are interested. If you need help locating clubs or districts feel free to contact me at spikes_411@hotmail.com and I will be more than happy to help. Jentry: There is a Rotary club in Dade, but I was unable to find the contact information. The district you would contact is Rotary District 6950 ( www.rotary6950.org ) but try contacting Brenda Wendt - wendt3@gate.net as she may be able to give you the contact information. Just let her know you are interested in the program etc. Diahnne: Florida happens to have their own youth exchange website. http://www.ryeflorida.org/ this website has some great information. Though if you would like to contact someone specifically try the District 6980 website http://www.rotarydistrict6980.org/ and specifically John Siegel at Youth-Exchange@RotaryDistrict6980.org . Again, if any of you have questions and would like to contact me, I would be happy to answer any of them or forward your questions on to the appropriate people. Yours in Rotary, Amanda Blanchard Spikes_411@hotmail.com
